I think you'd be hard pressed to find a cavalry unit that wasn't at least equipped with a brace of pistols. Most French cavalry units were intended to have the shorter, cavalry style musket for skirmishing.

I'm not sure why you'd want your cavalry to do more than the occasional skirmish though. Trading volleys with infantry would be quite suicidal for formed cavalry units. French dismounted Dragoons could stand in formed formations and fire volleys, though early on they dropped this obsolete tactic their name implied.

Took them awhile, but the French Dragoons eventually turned themselves into decent medium battle cavalry.

Lancers would be light cavalry.
Which rules set are you asking about? That would be helpful.

Lancers were better against infantry in a square than than swords due to their reach. They were also good againt fleeing troops, whether infantry or cavalry, but could be a hinderance in a prelonged cavalry melee.

The rules could reflect the psychological effect that lancers had on unit by applying a modifier to the lancers opponents.
