At what level of gaming should skirmishers disappear from the board and become an abstract value?
When playing small scale action, how would skirmishers best be represented rules-wise?
From a basing standpoint, would skirmishers be best based "skirmishing" or "in line" (as they actually fought. . . or so I've read?)

My preference is for the skirmishers to be based 2 figures per small base as they fought when out in the skirmishing role. When they were with the remainder of the unit, I will base them as part of the line they fought with.

I would think the value of skirmishers would become abstract once a stand represents a battalion as the mass of men represented would render a company of skirmishers pretty much irrelevant on the tabletop.
