Another game between the Austrians and ‘Germans’. The Germans had to defend the small farm and only positioned half their force with the remainder coming on in the 2nd and 4th turns. The Austrians attacking down both roads with their set up being only 6” on either side of the road.

Turn 1: The ‘Germans’ won the initiative and move the Wurttemburg Light Infantry from their setup position on the road to enter the farm yard. The remainder of the ‘Germans’ waited for the Austrian to come into range.

The Austrians troops on their right flank were hindered by the positioning of the heavy artillery.

Whilst on the left flank the Austrians moved forward a bit easier.

Turn 2: Winning the initiative the ‘Germans’ bring on their Brunswick Light Infantry battalion.

And consolidate further around the farm.

The Austrians advance up the left flank and bring on the remaining battalions on the right.

Turn 3: The Austrians win the initiative and reposition on the left flank mindful of the ‘Germans’ sitting behind their cover and waiting.

Whilst on their right flank all units have moved into their attacking column.

Turn 4: The initiative returns to the ‘Germans’ who bring on the remaining two battalions and moving the Wurttemburg and Brunswick Light Infantry up while the Bavarians wait.

On the right flank the Austrians enter the woods and on the left the Grenzer battalions move out into the field.

Turn 5: The lucky ‘Germans’ with the initiative wait.

The Austrians continue their advance up both sides.

Turn 6: The Wurttemburgers wait for the Austrian to come out of the woods and on the other side the Brunswick Light battalion draw first blood by firing on the Austrian Jaeger battalion.

The Austrians move out of the woods and face the Wurttemburgers behind the wall.

Image

The fearless Grenzer, supported by their artillery have now positioned themselves for the attack

Turn 7: Austrian initiative. The Austrians have seen the ‘German’ reserve lurking around the woods on their right and position a battalion to face this threat. The battalion of the Erzhog Karl Legion have moved to the wall where they discovered the Wurttemburgers and fired on them, forcing them to fallback.

Image

They then charged into the Wurttemburgers

Image

After a quick combat the Wurttemburgers fell back again, whilst the Erzhog Karl Legion consolidated and regrouped.

Meanwhile the Grenzer clambered over the hedge and advanced towards the Bavarian line.

Image

When it came to the ‘Germans’ move, the Bavarian Light infantry that had moved up behind the Wurttemburg unit fired on the Legion with a good result.

Image

The cowardly Bavarians on their right flank facing the heroic Grenzer fired their two batteries of artillery decimating the two battalion of Grenzer.

Turn 8: The first Austrian line battalion exit the woods and climb the wall readying to take the farm.

Image

At this stage we called the game off. The Austrians having been unintimidated by the ‘Germans’ allowed the ‘Germans’ to obtain the real goal of preventing the capture of the farm.

What rules did you use? and how many pts

Looked like the game was very strategic rather than a blood bath like the previous game- was this because of a scenario, terrain?

The rules are the CWC Victory set but with some variations. Light infantry use the small stands and I have increased the cost appropriately. The terrain rules are very similar to FoW.
Points were 2200 and the scenario was based on a battle during the American Civil war, Fox's Gap. I miss calculated on the time to reach the farm house as the objective. I allowed 6 turns but it should have been around 10-12. The terrain did cause some trouble but only in time taken to get through it.
I like these rules, they allow for varing sizes of battalions due to battle attrition and for the use of the light and grenadier companies in a battalion. You can also have lots of troops depending on the points allocation.

I have also fiddled with the army list, increasing the number of stands per company for Austria and Russia, decreasing the number of stands for the British and increasing the number of stands to the cavalry squadrons. Points allocation for this has also changed.
